Scouting

Girl Scouts had a recruiting party and kick off meeting in August/September.  This year, we have 32 girls in K to 8th grade from all over Knox County (Fredericktown, Howard, Mt. Vernon, and Centerburg).  We are going camping this weekend at Camp Cornish near Apple Valley and will continue to have meetings three times a week through May.  Our activities will include working on badges, fun outings, and service projects. Right now we are working with the girls to help them outline what they are interested in.  It is fun, yet difficult, to put them in the position to make decisions for themselves as they are used to being told what to do!

Troop 339 is having a Court of Honor Tuesday, October 11 at 7 pm in the Sanctuary.  You are all invited.  Seven of our twelve scouts have advanced a rank since our last Court of Honor 6 months ago (four have advanced two ranks).  Ten scouts have earned 30 merit badges between them.  This will be the last meeting held on a Tuesday.  Starting Monday, October 17 meetings will move to Monday for the rest of the year.  At that point we will evaluate which night works best.

The troop committee (Mary Beth Franks chair, Mike Conway, John Niegbarger, John Short treasurer, and George Stone Charter Organization Rep) have just adopted a budget for the period of September 1, 2011 to August 31, 2012.  The budget requires us to earn $1,000 to cover camping fees, badges, equipment etc.  All of the funds will be spent on our scouts.  Starting Saturday, October 15 and running until November 14 the troop will be selling popcorn to help fund the program.  Anyone wishing to purchase popcorn can see one of our scouts or Bill Shriver or Ryan Rupp.  Anyone not wanting popcorn, but wishing to make a donation can see Bill or Ryan.

In September the troop camped at the Kokosing Resevoir for one night.  The scouts enjoyed fishing in the lake.  We also did a service project hiking the trails, clearing branches from the trail and picking up a half trash bag full of trash.  Our next campout is October 14, 15, and 16 as we attend the district camporee at the Council Camp in Coshocton.  The pack will be staying in another part of the camp that same weekend.  Those cubs who are Webelos II (those becoming boy scouts in February) will be participating in the camporee with our troop.

The Cub Scouts of Pack 339 have had a very busy past couple months. The program year got started with the first day of school. Our Fall recruiting event was too good to be true, signing up 33 new Scouts and parents, bringing us up to a seam busting 66 Scouts and 13 registered Adults. It has taken us (me) a while to get re-organized but I think we are back on track. We began our Popcorn fundraiser in October which ends this Sunday (if anyone missed out on Popcorn, it will be available Sunday after Services).

We are having our Thanksgiving Pack Potluck this Monday at the Career Center (we are unfortunately too big to hold it at the Church any longer). This will be a great time for new families to get to know everyone and spend some time together.

The old adage of careful what you wish for has definitely proven itself to me the past few months...I have seen our Pack membership grow to the numbers I had wished it would, only to find us short on meeting space, supplies and equipment. With your prayers and God's watchful eye I am certain I will find the answers I am looking for to ensure the Pack continues to provide a safe and fun learning experience for all the Scouts.
